Ricky, our Interim Young People's Manager, has been with Children North East since January 2017

Tell us a bit about yourself

I grew up in Pennywell Sunderland in the 80s and 90s and despite not being aware of it at the time I was surrounded by poverty. I was also surrounded by love and a caring community which helped shape the person that I am today. I have a beautiful wife called Sarah who also works in the voluntary sector and 2 amazing kids called Loralai and Marceline. I currently live in Gateshead but have also lived in Newcastle and as mentioned Sunderland. I am a multi instrumentalist and one of my previous jobs was running a music project in Houghton-le-Spring Sunderland which was an amazing project, though I am slightly biased.

Tell us about your role in Children North East

I am the Young People's Service Manager at Children North East which currently has just under 30 staff running 4 different projects: Youth Counselling, Sexual Health, Mentoring and Youth Work. These projects are made up of funding from around 15 different sources across Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland and Northumberland.

I have been doing this Service Manager role since January and can truly say that I have inherited an amazing and dedicated team of people. Though sometimes the role can be demanding it is never dull and the time has flown by as we have moved from one thing to the other.

What's your favourite place in the North East?

Sunderland - I grew up in Sunderland and have a connection which is still strong despite not living there for the last 20 years

If you could invite anyone to dinner who would it be?

Steve Carrell and Rainn Wilson from the American Office
