Lesley is our NEWPIP Service Manager and is one of our longest serving members of staff having been with the organisation since 1999.

Tell us a bit about yourself

I was brought up in rural Northumberland and went to the Duchess Grammar School in Alnwick. I followed the crowd and drifted on to Newcastle Polytechnic to do a Sociology degree. After a year I realised it wasn't for me so I entered the world of employment, eventually ending up working in a local authority day nursery with under-fives! I loved it, went to college to do my nursery nursing, went on to do an Early Years degree and progressed to becoming Deputy Manager for a while.

Tell us about your role in Children North East

With a background in child development, and a growing passion to make a difference for children and their families, I joined Children North East on May 5th 1999 as a Development Worker supporting parents across rural Tynedale to develop their parenting skills.

After managing a range of family support services across the region for the last 19 years, including driving a double decker playbus, I have now firmly come back to my roots in the early years.  Managing the NEWPIP service is an exciting opportunity to be part of some ground breaking work in Newcastle.  I am helping to embed a culture across the early years workforce which puts the feelings and experiences of babies and the importance of their early relationships with their parents, at the centre of everything we do.

How do you spend your time outside of work?

Outside of work I prioritise spending quality time with my family.  Anyone who knows me knows that I love camping... rain, sunshine or wind, there's nothing better than spending time close to nature under canvas.

What is your favourite holiday destination?

For me Venice will take some beating. If I had to choose a favourite place, I think that would be it.
