Children North East’s Rochelle Green reached the final three in the special recognition category of Newcastle College’s Apprenticeship Awards.

Rochelle, 20, a business administration apprentice of Gateshead, was shortlisted from hundreds of entries across the region after being nominated by her assessor, Catherine Hassan.

"It gave me a huge boost in confidence"

And although she was pipped at the post for the title when the winners were announced at a ceremony at St James’ Park on March 7, Rochelle was thrilled to reach the final three.

“I was shocked to be nominated; I didn’t expect it at all,” said Rochelle. “It gave me a huge boost in confidence reading what people thought of me and being shortlisted in the final three from hundreds of entries.”

Rochelle completed her one-year apprenticeship in January this year and is now employed full time by Children North East as a receptionist/administrator.

Success story

The special recognition award honours an apprentice who has overcome significant challenges and barriers to learning or work. They will have remained on course to success, having demonstrated a professional and exemplary attitude to their apprenticeship.

Rochelle said she had struggled with maths at school, but thrived under the one-to-one support from her assessor.

“I feel like a different person now,” she said. “I used to be really quiet and nervous about talking to people, but since my apprenticeship I have a lot more confidence and really enjoy my job.”

"She is always friendly, upbeat and professional"

Rochelle joined Children North East in January last year after working as a care worker and in bars, and has thrived in her new career.

Chief executive Jeremy Cripps said: "We're all really proud here at Children North East of everything Rochelle has achieved.

“She's such an important member of staff as she's often people's first point of contact with our charity and she is always friendly, upbeat and professional."
