Meet Becca and Chesley – they’re set to become familiar faces in Prudhoe as a brand new project launches aimed at creating exciting opportunities for young people.

Prudhoe Youth Project is a volunteer-led charity set up by Prudhoe Community Partnership to improve opportunities for young people in the local area.

It has commissioned us at Children North East, the region’s longest established independent children’s charity to run twice-weekly youth work sessions for the next year.

On the streets

Youth workers, Becca Bennett and Chesley Conlin, will be on the streets two nights a week talking to youngsters about the different kinds of activities they’d like to get involved in. Thanks to funding from Prudhoe Town Council they will be meeting, supporting and consulting with young people about their interests, aspirations and needs within the local community.

Prudhoe Youth Project chair, Rachel Noble, explained the sessions will initially run between 5.30 and 7.30pm on Tuesdays and Fridays.

She said:

It’s all about building relationships with young people and identifying things they might want to do. We want the activities to be as inclusive as possible and we want the young people to be involved in the development of the service from day one.

Sean Soulsby, lead practitioner for Children North East’s Young People’s Service, added that partnerships were being established with other local youth providers such as Prudhoe East Project and Friends of Eastwood Park, who are supportive of the work.

“We’re also visiting Prudhoe High and Highfield Middle schools to introduce Chesley and Becca and hopefully to recruit a group of Prudhoe Youth Project volunteers to work alongside them and help with activities.”

Becca and Chesley want to hear the views of the town’s young people themselves – so look out for them – they might even share some of their hot chocolate!
