Sun, sea, sand and some amazing beach sculptures made Children North East's famous annual Sandcastle Challenge one of the most successful in its 25 year history.

Around 1,750 excited primary and middle school children descended on Sandhaven Beach, South Shields on Friday to show off their construction skills on the sands. ‘Build a New World’ was this year’s theme and the youngsters came up with some really inspirational ideas – from sea turtle sculptures to whole villages powered by green energy and even an electric car made from sand!

Tough task for the judges

Judges Paul Mooney and Ross Hutchinson

A team of judges including BBC Look North and Tyne Tees weathermen, Paul Mooney and Ross Hutchinson and Katie Tweedie from People’s Postcode Lottery whose players have given ten years of valuable support to Children North East, had the tough job of choosing the five winning schools.

The winners were the teams from Bridgewater School in Scotswood, Newcastle (The Wonderful Waste Warriors); Roseberry Primary in Chester-le-Street (Roseberry’s Plant Protectors); Ludworth Primary, Durham (The Genesis Genius); St Peter’s RC Primary, Gateshead (The Global Green Gang) and Beacon Hill Primary from Cramlington (The Beacon Hill Barnacles).

Marine Park Primary from South Shields also won a special prize for the best team name: The Clean, Green, Marine Machine.

"Best Sandcastle Challenge yet"

More than 126 staff from a total of 47 businesses, including event sponsor, Galliford Try Partnerships North, were on the beach to help children create their masterpieces.

Carol Taylor

Sandcastle Challenge organiser and senior fundraiser at Children North East Carol Taylor said: “This was our best Sandcastle Challenge yet and the theme of Build a New World was a fantastic way to celebrate its 25th anniversary as it really got the young people thinking about how to combat plastic pollution and all the different ways we can change the way we treat the environment.”

Each team won medals and £200 for their school from sponsor, Galliford Try and at September’s Children North East Sandcastle Ball, sponsored by Robertson North East, the business judged to have worked the most effectively with their school will be presented with the prestigious Sandcastle Trophy.
