On Thursday 2 May 2019, local elections will be held in 248 councils in England. These votes are important, deciding the make up and ethos of councils, who have powers over housing, council tax, transport and other public services, such as education, environmental health, housing, social services, leisure and planning.

The election is also for directly elected mayors in six areas of the UK – two of which are in the North East. This will be the first election for the North of Tyne Combined Authority Mayor, who will have additional powers for Northumberland, Newcastle and North Tyneside.

The elections are also for the regional mayor for the Tees Valley. Compared to councils, these mayors have additional responsibility, powers and budget relating to job creation and growing the local economy, skills development, infrastructure, transport across multiple local authorities (councils).

Local authorities deliver a range of services to children, young people and families, and set out the strategic vision and goals for the area they represent. Because of local powers over budget allocation and public services, the elections provide a great opportunity to raise issues affecting children, young people and families with local representatives.

We would like to see all potential councillors and mayors committing to challenge inequality and to champion the rights of children.
